October 4th, Blogtoberfest

The list I made for today:

1. Cleaning Windows
George did the lounge and conservatory and Ian did the dining room.  That's just the inside, but now they're mildew free which is nice.   The outside will mean a visit to the storage unit to get the gear to do the cleaning; might do that on Saturday as it's close to spinning.

2. Making bread
Despite me using the old jar of yeast and then having to add some fresh and whoops on one of the kneading bits it seems to have worked and didn't take a lot of time either!  I'll be cleaning the breadmaker and putting it on Trademe, if I'm going to make bread I'm just as likely to do it using the Kitchenaide as I am using the breadmaker.  It's a really good breadmaker and deserves a home where it will get used rather more often.
It was delicious, I'll be making more, lots more!

3. Maybe make some real pasta now that I have a drying rack for it.
Didn't get around to this, maybe on the weekend.

4. More gardening
We vacuumed instead, lounge/dining/kitchen now all sorted, but we did water the lettuces and seedlings.  Only things not showing any sign of movement yet are the celery, tomatoes and zucchini.

5. I want to start sewing George's quilt so he and I can decide on a layout
I did get started, 2/3rds of the way through the 2.5" strip piecing.

About halfway through the piecing.

6. Play another game with the boys
No, didn't do this

7. Work
done

8. Knitting - probably CPH as the shawl is a bit too involved to do when there is the potential for interruptions, as proved by today's little debacle.
Dyed 200g of sock yarn, I think it needs another dip in a tomato red as the crimson has come out a little too pink.   Might do that tonight.  The yarn was from the Milton Mill, 200g worth.  I've run out of time for knitting now, but tomorrow's a new day.

A bit too pink, that lighter bit is the mink yarn which has taken the colour differently.

I think I've also worked out what's causing my dry hands, it is likely the pump soap in the kitchen and I've just put bar soap there instead.

Tomorrow is going to be devoted to knitting, I'll drop the boys off at their day activity and then sit down and knit (please no tink).  A wee bike ride to Barrington to get some printer ink will be the only other thing aside from possibly some Xbox time.

Bread!

We ran out of bread for lunches today, but it's not payday until tomorrow so I got the bread machine up and running.
Dark Rye, hopefully yummy!

Of icing and ducklings

After school the day before yesterday we made the icing for our gingerbread and we all did some icing. Ian chose pink, George chose blue and I got green.  We made royal icing for the first time ever and it worked well; the icing bags are glad bags with the corners cut off.
I showed them what to do and then they did their own interpretations.  You can see the concentration!

Yesterday on the way home from dropping off the boys I heard some peeping from the drain and had to come back with my camera; very hard to get a good shot when you're not used to the camera and also the lighting in there wasn't good and I didn't want to use the flash and scare them
Can you tell what they are?  4 wee ducklings; no sign of Mum and this morning there was only one and no sign of Mum.  This afternoon no ducklings at all, but no signs of wee corpses either so I'm hopeful Mum found somewhere better for them to live.

I'm in the midst of sorting out birthday party stuff; bought some fabric crayons and pillowcases and they're going to decorate their own pillowcases as well as the treasure hunt; gives them something to take home that's not a bunch of lollies too.  I've got the press to set them too so it should go well and should appeal to both boys and girls.  Also got the balloons and party blowers and cheerios (cocktail sausages for the non-NZers reading).   I've also taken time to cut out fabric for a tiered skirt for me; with enough left over for a top.  Also a couple of t-shirts for me and will do a couple for the boys too.

Gingerbread

I had a quick look in Ian's birthday cookbook while the boys were at school and found a recipe for gingerbread.   I'd been looking for one for a while now and I decided that's what we'd do when the boys got home from school
This is the book:
Although I'm pretty sure I've got gingerbread recipes in other books I've never managed to find one.  I have made gingercake before which was yummy, but we have Christmas cookie cutters that we wanted to use.
So, we followed the recipe, got it all mixed, kneaded and then had to wait an hour.   The boys were very patient and at the end of that hour the mix was rolled out (a cooperative effort) and then the cookies cut.
Into the oven for 10 minutes and this was the result

They were very yummy, Ian kept sneaking back to get more, so once they'd cooled I had to place them into storage so we can ice them tomorrow.  The kitchen bench is a mess though
Worth it though; have to go and clean it now I think even though I really can't be bothered.   Then I'm going to do some more spinning or maybe some work on Thomas' sock

Of fabric, noses and baking

I got home from the school run just in time, my phone was delivered!   It's all charged now and waiting on Telecom to switch it over so I can download some apps and get the rest of it set up; so far it seems fairly intuitive which is good as the manual isn't the best I've ever seen.

1st thing I did today aside from the usual getting kids to school and going to work was to pay a visit to Stitch in Colombo St to see their sale.   I didn't spend much, but I did get 2.5m of fabric plus a free fat quarter.
My favourite is the colourful owls on their navy background.  The tan will be going with the owls even though I'm not sure what I'll be making; the salmon will join the stash and the more subtle owls will go with the main owls somehow.   I think I might be envisioning a cushion cover even though we don't normally use cushions.
I might have spent a bit more today too; a grab bag of Timberland clothes for the boys off the NZ sale website and some probiotic products for the boys and me.   Going to try them on Ian as there's been some research on ASD children and probiotics with positive results.   Hadn't been planning either purchase, but it's worth it I think.   The fabric came out of my remaining cash reserves.
I've finished my circle skirt too, no photos till Thomas gets home I'm afraid.

I picked up Ian from school as normal and the plan was to go to the gym from there; unfortunately the gym was not to be.   Apparently he tripped earlier in the day and went nose-first into a metal bar; ow!   There's swelling and apparently a little blood at the time, I don't know if he's broken it or not, but I figure gym is not a good idea less than 2 hours after that sort of thing.   Instead we just came home and he's getting some computer time while I make pikelets.  I don't make standard pikelets, these are golden syrup pikelets from a recipe my family has used for years.   At the request of Nicole (Casper on Twitter); I'm posting the recipe for you.

Golden Syrup Pikelets:

1 cup plain flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup of milk
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 egg
1 dessertspoon butter
1 tab golden syrup (I often use more than this)

Sift flour and cream of tartar, add sugar.  Add beaten egg and milk in which soda has been dissolving and mix.  Melt butter and syrup together and add.  Mix well, but do not stir after commencing to cook pikelets.

My lovely kitcheaide is doing the hard work as you can see.  Your batter should be smooth; no lumps.

Start to put tablespoons of batter in your preheated frypan.   I'm using my stainless steel electric frypan for this as it has plenty of room.   I used to butter it up first, but find that's not necessary and can cause burning.
after they've been in a wee bit they'll start to bubble a bit; once a fair number of the bubbles have burst through the top it's time to turn them; this one's almost there:
A few minutes later and they're half done; at this point you can't rely on bubbles to see if they're ready.   I have a feel for it now, but you could put the fish slice under them and check.
And finally, all done!
This is halfway through the baking, at the end of it there's actually less as the boys keep taking them to eat, lol.  I might have had a few too.

Oh, and Ray wanted to help; it seems the best way to help if you're a cat is to ask for pats
It is so hard to get a decent photograph of a black cat!   I didn't give her pats though as then I would have had to wash my hands again.   Now I'll reuse the frypan for dinner; we're having homemade burgers.   Using multigrain buns from Bakers Delight, mince from the butcher mixed with egg and honey and maybe a little salt; homegrown lettuce, bought tomato, cheese and ham.   Thomas can cook his when he gets home since he'll be late.

Finally, craft time!

Admittedly not a huge amount of craft time, but I have cut out a skirt in this fabric:
From memory this is one of Anna Maria Horner's Little Folks prints on a cotton voile base; very good quality and it's going to be a full circle skirt.   I've not had one of those for years, but seeing as I love the vintage look I can pair this with a nice fitted top or twin set (have to knit that first).   It may even look good with my one hand knit top.   I will probably have to wear a half-slip under it and I suspect later I'll have to downsize it, but you can't sew for the size you might be when you're short on stuff to wear now.

I've also prewashed this:
This will be a tiered skirt to replace my current one which is really well past it's use by date.  The current one has various laces on it, I don't think I have any in my stash that match this so it'll be plainer, but the fabric has the slightly gathered look that works so well for these skirts.

Once these two are all finished, which shouldn't take too long as both are simple patterns, I'll be making some new tops for the boys for the summer.

Got a little more tidying done too, less paper in the bedroom now, still a wee way to go yet though; some dustbunnies in there are getting vicious!

The boys got home from Grandma's today too, they had a great time and maintained good behaviour until this afternoon.   Not quite so good at the beach.  They went to see the latest Spy Kids movie which they loved!
When they got home they wanted to go on the computer, unfortunately for them there was baking instead.   We made chocolate brownie; yum!

A week off, or, what can be accomplished when not working.

Admittedly I'm still spending too much time on Mafia Wars and Frontierville, but since I finished the last lot of work I've been very busy.

Saturday morning the boys and I did gardening; the bed in front of the lounge is now all done except where the carrots are.   As a reward they got the Wii for the afternoon which went down well.

On Sunday the boys and I baked; well, mostly me, but they were quite happy to help eat.  I made chocolate muffins; put enough in the freezer for school lunches this week and we ate the rest.   Most of the rest of Sunday the boys got to vege out on the Xbox, partly cos Ian's really tired after his throwing up bug the previous Monday.  He's much bouncier now.

Monday was my first day with the boys at school and Thomas in Wellington.  I took a couple of photos:
The pile of fabric I planned to cut out, all for me.  I actually got most of it done.  One lot I decided wasn't me and there's another that I still have to decide on a pattern for, but aside from that it's done.  4 winter t-shirts, 1 summer t-shirt and a pair of cords.  Sewing will come in the next week or so.

The view through our front door, needs some work as you can see.
Our peach trees, all the leaves are gone now which means that it's much easier to see just how far out the cats get!  They're not up there on this photo, but they don't stick to the thicker branches; they're right out near the edge.  I swear they're really squirrels.
And finally, this arrived on Monday.   I won it a wee while back from Wiley Crafts, but the first package went missing so had to be resent.  This copy is not autographed, but they will be sending a signed one and another book to make up for the wait.  The yarn that came with it is enough to make the Pump Jockey jacket in the largest size.  Unfortunately Thomas wouldn't wear it in this colour, so I'll probably use it either for Ian or me; probably Ian as green is his favourite colour.  The yarn feels nice, springy and resiliant, I like that in a jersey type yarn.

I also did some more knitting on my Spring Garden Tee, still working on it now but there's only about 2.5" plus border to go
I've tried it on and I think it's going to look good.  I've had to make more increases, so changed from every 5th row to every 3rd row to take it up to the 2nd to last size for the hip.

After school we baked; only pikelets, but they all got eaten.

Tuesday:  More cutting out, more knitting and more pikelets!  Both boys really like pikelets.  It did mean Ian wasn't really hungry when Emma turned up for his food tests, but he quite happily participated anyway and kissed his bits of orange.  Emma and I shared the unkissed bits when he was done.   Hopefully by the end of this study Ian will have a wider range of foods he'll eat.

Wednesday:  The final lot of cutting out and I decided to add some trim to the cords.  They're going to have a contrast pocket lining and a stripe of the same fabric down the outside pockets too; the main fabric is fawn coloured and the contrast is a bit of black kiwiana fabric which has kiwi's on it as well as pohutakawa and NZ.  Works really well with it and it'll make the trousers stand out.

More knitting of course and have determined that Ian wants mittens too.  He'll get his after George's are finished.  Ian wants green and orange mittens so I'll have to dye some orange I think.  His will be colourwork too, but no special pattern as that would detract from George's special mittens.
Here's George's so far:

Looking good so far, though the colour is inaccurate.  The cream isn't that buttery looking.
Baked again today too.  We picked some of our apples on the weekend, they're bruised in some cases, a bit birdied and also have codlin moth so I grated them and made a spiced apple cake.  My oven is definitely dodgy; I've made this before and it's been perfect, but in order to get the inside cooked the outside burned a little.  It's still yummy though!

Photo's a little blurry as Ian took it.

On the subject of the oven, I rang EQC this morning as payment still not through.  Last time I rang 3 weeks ago I was told ours was approved for payment, had been for 3 weeks already and they get paid out in 6 weeks max, or in other words it should have been paid out by today.   No money today, so rang them.  No, it's not approved yet, no they don't know when it will be either.  So I asked to be transferred to a supervisor as I'd had enough.  I got cut off.  Rang back and had to sit in their queue.  Finally got through and then to a supervisor who listened very nicely to my complaints (I was perfectly polite if a little upset) and said she would escalate it but still couldn't give me a time frame.  They'll ring me when it's approved and I'm to ring back in 2 weeks if haven't heard anything to get an update.  Unfortunately though we still have to wait.   I can cope with this for the oven, we're learning it's new ways and just not leaving it alone.  The washing machine isn't spinning properly any more, and it's getting worse.  I think we're just going to have to replace it and hope  they pay out reasonably quickly.
After it's paid out we have to hold onto the big items for 6 months after that date; don't know where the heck we'll store them; cant' keep the car out for 6 months and the garage is really the only place sufficiently weatherproof.  Might have to put them on the covered deck and put tarps around them for extra protection.
I'm calm now, but this morning I was really pissed off with EQC, partly due to the delays, but more because of the complete misinformation I was given last time.

Tomorrow: I'm planning on paying a visit to Oxford for the area open day; they're holding it for Christchurch.  I don't have much money, but I'll take the camera and hopefully I'll remember to take some photos.  Will need to come home in time to get the boys from school, and also to drop into the supermarket as we're out of most things atm.   Either that or we'll be buying dinner.  I think groceries will be on Saturday this time.

Winter is coming

and it's time to think about fixing our curtains.  The ones we have at the moment have done us well in the lounge, but a combination of age, children and kittens has taken its toll.   The ones on the sliding door in particular are not feeling well.  Hooks have been ripped out due to the boys pulling on them, wrapping themselves in them and generally misbehaving with them.  There are cat marks from the kittens climbing up when they were smaller and the hems are coming undone too.
The tracks aren't the best either, they're not really long enough so the curtain is in the way when going through the door even when drawn open completely.  They're also attached to the door frame so the aforementioned misbehaving by boys has resulted in the screws opening up the wood.
You can't shut them properly now, so today I finished getting what I need to make new ones.   I already had the fabric from one of Millers sales a few years ago
It's the purply one in the middle, got the curtain tape a couple of weeks back, but couldn't get started until I got this:
This is an adjustable track 2.9-4m; we need it set to about 3m so it'll be good and once we install it this weekend then I can measure and start making the new ones.
I don't need to purchase anything new now to get these made, so it's just a matter of time now, want to try and get them done in the next week as school holidays start the following week.
Sometime in the next week or so I also need to get some new school tops, some surge protectors for our bigger appliances (washing machine, dishwasher etc) and maybe some more storage containers for the kitchen.  The storage isn't important though, I did pick up these 2 beauties yesterday
The top one will be for flour probably, the bottom also for flour, but the 5kg bags of Hi-grade so I'm not dealing with paper bags that tend to break open when the boys drag them out of the cupboard.   I'm doing a bit more baking at the moment and I want to keep that up so good storage is a must.
This is what the boys and I made yesterday
My Gran's chocolate cake, I've ammended the recipe to add more cocoa, but it's a lovely, simple chocolate cake that turns out well even when the oven is playing up
Ginger fudge slice, this is a biscuit based slice with chocolate icing, yummy!

I'll be doing more baking, but our oven is a little dodgy atm.  Since Feb 22nd it's had some issues, the elements are running hotter, one in particular is much much hotter, and it turns out that the actual oven part is also hotter.   We've put this in on our earthquake claim as well as the washing machine which is sometimes not starting properly, well it starts and then decides to go back to ready.   It's an intermittent fault, but it's post earthquake as is the noise it now makes and the occasional leak.   Earthquakes are not good for appliances!  The claim is in, just have to hope that it gets approved quickly so I can go out and get new ones.   I know what I want, but don't really want to get them until I know we have the funds.
I hope everyone else getting new appliances on insurance is looking at the star labels too, we want efficient appliances, or at least as efficient as can be managed on our budget.

Getting off the depressing earthquake appliance thing, I've been doing more work on my Diotima Shell
Just a teaser at this point I'm afraid, this is in Noro Silk Mountain which is now discontinued, it's a boucle which I love and is being knit in rib.   Haven't tried it on except to check that my head goes through the top, which it does.   Using all of 5 balls of yarn, so basically knitting till I run out; this is a stashbusting exercise.   I've 3 more colours in this yarn which will be used for a hat or two and hopefully a Liesl.  Hoping it'll look good in that.  In Rav it's down as a super bulky, but I think it's really more Aran weight, doesnt' knit up right for super bulky.  Won't be able to work on the hats just yet though, this should be finished tomorrow, just in time to start a shawl I'm test-knitting and then work on a jersey I'm knitting from Colourmart yarn as part of a summer KAL.
Gotta go, lots to do!

Merry Christmas!

You wouldn't think it was Christmas Eve, the boys are not going to sleep, which means Santa isn't coming yet.  We can't wrap the presents yet either.   However, they are looking forward to tomorrow, despite already having some of their presents.  They already have the pool, and the kittens!

I'm still working on Thomas' socks; the first is finished, second is only 10 rows into the foot after increases finished, and I realised afterwards I did a different toe on this one.  Nevermind, this means Thomas can decide which he prefers, I'm not frogging.
Just a plain basic sock, but in this yarn that's what we want.  I'm not sure I like the colourway, but Thomas seems happy enough, so we'll keep on knitting.   I'm going to take a break tomorrow for some spinning on Christmas day though, between making a loaf of bread and another pavlova (Dad wants one too)
Last couple of days have been busy, today's been cleaning day.  Yesterday I made the first pavlova
did some gardening
and watched our kittens.  Ray desperately wants to get outside, she's worked out the front screen door so we have to lock it now; she's a shoulder cat given the chance.  Star's not quite so friendly, but still lovely.   Here for your entertainment are some gratuitous kitty photos

Look at us, aren't we lovely?   I am controlling your mind silly human, we are lovely!
Why thank-you for the lovely dangly toys; we are finding them fascinating, do you mind if we steal some to kill later?
