I've been working on my health and fitness, 2 steps forward, 4 back it feels like. Workouts had to stop due to illness, injury etc but I'm back to it again and hoping to do better this time.
This year started badly though, we lost my father-in-law and he'll be greatly missed. Before he passed we had blocked drains which also affected our neighbour in the front property and our water main also sprung a leak. On top of that I fixed a fence, which stuffed up my forearm. Trying to fix that with rest, massage and stretching.

As far as what I've been doing, I've got some photos.

Made a workout skirt with undershorts, there was a whoopsie with the cutting out as I didn't read the pattern properly (bad Rachelle). I cut out one of each skirt piece which gave me a 3/4 and a full circle skirt piece. Didn't have enough fabric to recut, so put the 3/4 on the front and used the full circle on the back and I think I actually prefer it that way! The pattern is the Rally Skirt by Greenstyle Creations and I'm planning on making a second one with a tiered overskirt in stretch mesh.

Used some double gauze to make this Galicia top from Itch to Stitch. The Betty is a full circle skirt done in panels (with pockets) and a straight waistband; the Riviera is a very fitted sleeveless blouse with several options. I chose the basic model, no frills and no bias panels, mainly due to needing to drop the bust dart which wouldn't have been so easy with the panels. The fabric is actually a poly cotton sheet that was in my Gran's stash when she moved into a retirement village, since she didn't need it I got it. There were 3 total and I still have 1 left. Not sure how old, but probably almost as old as I am! I used Gigli medium weight interfacing for the shirt and the heavy one for the skirt waistband.

I made no changes to the skirt and sewed it in my waist size, if I made it again I'd halve the height of the waistband as I find narrow waistbands sit better; since it's wide I can't tuck my shirt in without the sitting badly problem being too obvious. It's not a problem with the pattern, all patterns with the wide waistband do this on my post-menopausal figure.

The Riviera blouse had a couple of issues on me, I think this is because I do have fluff. I sewed it in size L bust graded to XL waist and hips (my normal sizing in this pattern range) and if I did it again I'd go up a size for each section; when they call it close fitting they're not kidding! For me at least there wasn't enough wearing ease; would probably be fine on someone who isn't carrying the extra fluff though. I also found the armhole a little too high which was uncomfortable, so I'd drop this by 1/2" or so in future versions. As well as the grading I also dropped the bust point by quite a bit; my bust isn't tethered at the average height on my chest and gravity has also taken a toll. I got it in the right spot though, so I'm happy about that. I do love the style and in a slightly larger size this would be perfect. If you're considering sewing this, I'd recommend doing a toile in your normal size to see if it works for you or if you need to size up; seam allowances are 1/2" and all seams are either done on the overlocker or by french seam, so adjusting it afterwards isn't easy. For the front fastenings I chose to go with KAM snaps and I think that's worked well on this.

In the end I love the overall look and apparently so do other people, someone pulled in beside me as I was walking home to say they loved my dress!

Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-86669839198307499972021-10-17T09:54:00.000+13:002021-10-17T09:54:01.794+13:00Rebecca Page Classic Blouse
Yay, the Classic Blouse has been released by Rebecca Page, best stand collar I've ever sewn. I did however get picked and now I've been sewing for them for two months. Month one is still a secret, however month two is this month and I've sewn a dress that's already been released but which needed more photos as well as a dress that isn't part of my obligations but is now my absolute favourite t-shirt/dress pattern ever! It fits well, no armpit/boob wrinkles and was super easy to sew and best of all it lets the fabric be the star of the show, and this fabric is definitely the star!

Full disclosure, any links to Rebecca Page are part of the ShareaSale programme and I do get a small reward if you purchase using my link.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; In the meantime we've got the first coat of fence colour up which is looking good; photos will come after coat 2 is done. As well as that I've been on the Xbox, spinning, knitting and sewing. Eldest now has a couple more pairs of trousers, but still no job.

I'm still working on my health, the dizzy turns have come back, they only last a moment and don't really affect what I can do, but they do not feel good! I'm not sure what they are, but at the moment I'm leaning towards food or supplement related. I did get glutened at the end of May, but I also re-started my liver support formula around the same time so I've cleaned up my diet again and have stopped the liver support as of today; fingers are crossed that it clears up again.

Today I put together a flat pack, just a little one which I'm using to keep all my knitting WIPs in, really happy with how it turned out and it means I can start tidying up our wardrobe now. Eventually I'm planning on putting in a wardrobe organiser as it's currently a bit of a mess. It's a traditional 1980's wardrobe, so shelf on top of a lengthwise pole for hanging garments. Very hard to organise in any meaningful way.

This is the new piece of furniture, and my basket for guild is on top. I'm blaming Covid even though here in NZ it's not had as much of an impact yet.

I've still been sewing, still working on Gran's chair and still knitting too. I've also been sidetracked by the garden and DIY; things like replacing all the internal door handles and also fixing up the rollers on the wardrobe doors; I still have a heap of them to go! We also got a bunch of large bills, one of which was expected (the replacement fence) and the others weren't. A new dishwasher, a large vet bill and now we've got a toilet to replace and Dh needs a CPAP which insurance doesn't cover at all. We also need a better router but the type we need is of course in the expensive section and our printer died after about 10 years of service. I also ordered some fabric in all that, but it was necessary for sanity. None of it arrives for a wee while as it's all yet to be printed, but it'll be worth it!

I've finished a few items, so here are some photos to prove it; this has all been from late summer through to now.

Greenstyle Clara wrap cardigan with Greenstyle Moxi shorts. The colour of your skin in any population should not be a reason for bad treatment or abuse. I've seen lesser examples here in New Zealand, usually against people of Asian descent. I've not seen it against people who are black, probably because there aren't that many people in New Zealand who are black.

I grew up being fed the anti-Maori lines, I was in my 20's when I changed what I believed from what I was taught and slowly those who taught me that have also changed. I see that as a sign of hope, those who taught me had a good reason to feel that way when they learned it, but despite that they changed. If they can then so can most.

I am privileged, I am a white woman and although being female lessens my privilege I am aware now that I have privilege. Growing up I had no notion of that fact at all. I have brought up my children to be aware that people are people no matter their colour, orientation or age; treat everyone with respect except bullies; stand up to them. If someone is bullying someone else speak up; that's one thing I've always done, even at school. The bullies won't like it, but someone has to do it.

For those who think that the sewing or knitting communities don't have problems with racism, you're wrong. There's overt racism, there's the hidden version with snarky comments passed as "just joking" and there's the head in the sand version. If you don't stand up when these things happen you are enabling the racism and you are a part of the problem.

Stand up, if you have friends who are directly affected by this ask them how you can help. Unfortunately I don't so I can't do this, however I can still stand up in the virtual world and say I support Black Lives Matter and I believe we can change things for the better to make all people equal in treatment.
I also did some knitting and a lot of Xbox and some work on Gran's chair which I then reversed and am now contemplating the next step. I'm also working on my hormonal balance since surgical menopause means my body lacks those important hormones. I've been on the lowest dose for a couple of years, but that's not enough to support bone health and I was getting muscle pain too. Now up on .75mcg and still in the settling phase; will ask for bloods after a couple more weeks. Have been getting a little abdominal discomfort but that may well be related to the strawberry jam rather than the hormones; at least that's what I'm hoping! Anyway I know that's not what you're here for, you want to see my sewing so here it is.
I think I've found a pattern company that works for me, so far all the patterns I've tried from Greenstyle have worked well. I've got fabric ready to cut out the Whistler Jacket next and of course there will be a few of the tank top and at least one t-shirt for Dh. I now need to stash dive for the merino and to find the stretch velour I know I have too. May even make Dh two t-shirts. I think the boys are both ok for clothes for the moment, except possibly for singlets for youngest; luckily I have some white merino for that too.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-51270585863816743372020-04-14T19:52:00.002+12:002020-04-14T19:52:19.402+12:00Sewing for the men in the houseWell, two of them anyway; youngest doesn't need anything atm.
I've had success with Jalie patterns in the past so went with Jalie 2788. I was so sure I'd like it that I cut it out in 2 different fabrics that I love! Fabric 1 was from deep stash and was a polyester burn out fabric. Fabric 2 was far more recent and was a custom dyed merino/nylon.
Now these two fit well; I made adjustments to the long sleeved version to take it from 3/4 to long sleeved and made the back neck high; the original pattern is only a deep V which isn't ideal for winter. I'm super happy with these and can't wait to wear them. The instructions are a little sparse, they expect you to have some sewing experience already I think.

I also made a pair of workout capris; the pattern for that was 5004's Candy leggings, but I'm not keen on the fit; I got camel toe and lots of wrinkling at the back. I've fixed the camel toe by scooping out the front rise a bit; but I think the wrinkles might be due to a low rear end so I'm going to have to think about that one. Still have a Jalie pattern to try out for capris; otherwise I'll take a pattern off my commercial ones that are almost dead.
It's some mesh knit that I bought over a decade ago and I'm glad I used it cos it's pretty, but it's not something I'd buy again.
The pattern was Bella Sunshine Designs Sahara Dress/Top in the tunic length. It looked super pretty on the website, but the front and back are the same size. I'm pretty sure that most of us are the same front and back; in my case I'm bigger on the front due to the surmeno tummy. When I sewed this up there was a good fit in front and a waterfall of excess fabric on the back. I ended up putting in 8cm worth of darts!
The other issue is the shoulder shaping is odd, it's a 1cm seam, but the shaping of the edge of the shoulder is as you'd expect for a much wider seam. I won't be purchasing any further patterns from these guys, but I'm happy with the other brands I've used so far so one lemon isn't going to put me off indie designers.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-7472634604946123422020-03-31T10:19:00.000+13:002020-03-31T10:19:16.848+13:00Day 6 of the lockdownI've been keeping reasonably busy over the last few days. I'm taking advantage of the workouts on TV1 in the mornings at the moment; can't do the full hour yet but am working to do longer each day.

Today I'll either work on Gran's chair or do more sewing, not sure which yet.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-58427584296239202292020-03-25T11:28:00.002+13:002020-03-25T11:28:48.648+13:00Covid-19 lockdown in NZSo on Monday it was announced that New Zealand would be on a four week lockdown from midnight on Wednesday (today). Essential services are still running which includes food supplies, pharmacies, doctors (though not face to face unless absolutely necessary). There's been some bickering over what constitutes an essential store, last I heard The Warehouse was saying it'd be open; our Prime Minister wasn't convinced since they are a general store who happens to have some food stocks; they're not primarily a food shop. Bunnings was also saying they're essential and I can see some sense in that, a hardware store could be handy in a plumbing emergency; though plumbers and electricians will still be working.
We've had our chimney clean postponed until who knows when; pretty sure it was cleaned last year so should be safe to use and it's only a couple of years old and we've only used dry wood which reduces creosote risk.
I really hope everyone takes this seriously and doesn't go out and meet people outside their own home. I also hope that the government takes sufficient measures to ensure people don't lose their homes over this; they have taken some for people with mortgages but not much for rental properties aside from a rent freeze. For those who've lost their jobs a rent freeze isn't sufficient help unfortunately.

I've just checked my essential supplies and I'm good for elastic and for interfacing and I have enough fabric for a lot of sewing, plus yarn, fibre and haberdashery supplies are all good. Food is also fine for at least another week and a half so we can hunker down till that runs out. I'm starting to cut out fabric to sew so that I can give Dh back his whiteboard gaming table for work. He does know if I run out of things to sew I'll need it back to do more cutting out though. He should be ok with that, the first two things I've cut out are for him!

This pile has 2 pairs of cargo pants cut out, both primarily corduroy but one is using some wool flannel that wasn't enough to do anything with by itself; there's some piecing as the corduroy wasn't quite long enough to make pants for Dh either so the knees are flannel along with the pockets and belt keepers. Should look good I think and gets 3 lots of fabric out of the stash. I'm also looking for shirt fabric for Dh, according to my very out of date spreadsheet I have some possibilities so I don't need to go out looking which is good. Even though there is a fabric store open today I'm not keen on going out if it's not necessary.

My other project will be to work on the chair; I now have some cotton batting courtesy of a guild friend so it's possible to actually get it finished; no more horse hair available, but we will make do.

One thing I've done that I shouldn't is to give into the stress and buy sugary snacks. Will have to make sure I don't get more next pay since they do affect my health. I already have the post nasal drip which they cause for me and a throat pressure issue (this is standard for me when I overindulge). I still have some left but after today will have to stop completely and eat fruit instead. Much better for me and our local fruit and vege shop will be available so I can stock up there if I run out. We've offered to let our front neighbours pick some of our pears if they want; they just need to let us know so we don't get close by accident; their son loves pears so it'll help them out and us since we can't keep up with the tree.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-87591247722161739302020-03-20T20:20:00.002+13:002020-03-20T20:22:56.181+13:00It's the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fineAt least for the moment, aside from high stress levels of course, but there won't be many people out there without stress issues right now.
I am still having health issues, but things are slowly improving, my cubital tunnel issues aren't improving for some reason but I'm also low on estrogen which might be affecting healing and inflammation. I'm seeing a physio, though next week it's a different physio as mine came into contact with someone with Covid-19 so he's stuck at home for 2 weeks; assuming he doesn't get it. It's possible I may be referred for further investigation, but who knows how that'll work with the current situation.

I'm still knitting of course, but this year I only tried to get in as a cheerleader for Sock Madness rather than a team; a team would have caused greater injury, so not worth it. I've also been sewing, but the dress I made is now awaiting next summer to get finished, it's a touch snug right now but I don't want to make adjustments just yet.

1st Sock Madness sock, size L with 7 repeats of the pattern on the foot; so much larger than required, but it fits youngest.

My next projects will be more workout gear for me as well as casual trousers for Dh and sweat pants for eldest in a merino sweatshirting to keep him warm at school. He's now in Yr 13 so doesn't have to wear uniform any more; he just has to look tidy.
I'm also going to do more work on the chair, a friend at guild has some cotton wadding her father bought 45 years ago and she's giving it to me to help out; if I bought some it'd be way too expensive so she's a lifesaver. I have one horsetail, but can't get any more, the business I got it from (our cat food shop) is closing down so instead I'll be carding it with wool and keeping my fingers crossed it works.

I'm still cycling, but have taken a few days off after getting a cold, no one else in the family has it but me. It's relatively mild but blocked a tear duct, haven't had that happen for a while, don't want it to happen again. I've been massaging it and using colloidal silver to help clear things up and it has improved. Looking forward to getting back on the bike.

On the Covid-19 front things aren't too bad here in NZ yet, our borders are pretty much closed, people who've come in from overseas are self-isolating (mostly, there have been a small number of tourists who were a bit cavalier in their attitudes and got caught out by that) and as far as we know there's no community transmission; we're all hoping it stays that way but of course there's a fair chance it won't. Supermarkets have been hit with the stupid panic buyers. I was lucky enough to be able to get everything we needed for the fortnight by going to 3 different places yesterday and got a wee bit extra to see us through a touch longer if needed. I didn't go overboard though, got one bag of flour, not 2, the usual amount of bread etc. Gatherings over 100 people indoors are now prohibited, guild is still meeting tomorrow, but I suspect that may go on hiatus for a bit shortly. My husband's Judo club has closed down for the moment; not a sport that can do social distance easily, plus they have kids classes and don't want to spread it that way either.

One thing, the yarn community and also now some of the sewing community have been offering patterns free to help people stay sane while they're stuck at home; I thought that was a wonderful idea so I also put my one and only pay for pattern up free till the end of the month; hopefully it will help someone else stay sane through this.
Lace Chain Baby Socks the code to get it free is "<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">AsWeKnowIt" without the quotes.

the pink fabric was a complete bitch to sew, it's some sort of swim fabric and none of my machines liked it. My coverhem just said no, she's now up for sale on Trademe, not because of this, but because she also refuses to play nicely with woolly nylon; the listing mentions her foibles and what she's good at too.
My sewing machine started shredding thread, changed needles and it did it a couple more times. She also skipped stitches. Will see how she is with another new needle (different brand) and decent fabric; hoping she doesn't need a service. Even the overlocker skipped stitches on this stuff, especially when adding clear elastic. I will be ordering some proper athletic fabric to try out and making more Tempos in that. I also have some custom printed cotton lycra to make another pair; I love this pattern!
Aside from the Greenstyle patterns I have cut out a custom fit t-shirt from Apostrophe Patterns in the blue print I used for the shorts, it doesn't have much stretch so I couldn't use the Greenstyle Green Tee. After that it's probably time for me to make some casual trousers for Dh, I've got some nice green corduroy that'll work well and some grey wool flannel to use as a contrast; not enough of either to make pants, but together they'll do the job nicely.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-12384226521317548312020-02-11T09:06:00.000+13:002020-02-11T09:06:11.400+13:00A Health UpdateI've been seeing a kinesiologist and we've definitely made some progress on the bowel side of things, however I'm still getting muscle pain, tingling in my right foot and injuring myself more often than I should; it's also taking longer than it should for me to heal. I'm figuring that I need to do more than I have been so I've been reading the Medical Medium books; well, I've read part of his first one and part of the Liver Rescue one which I got out from the library to read on my Samsung tablet.
I'm not ready to jump in fully yet, but a lot of what he writes makes sense to me so I'm going to slowly improve my diet to what he recommends and the first thing I've done it bought a juicer and started on this stuff:

This is my first morning of taking celery juice (please ignore the crumbs, school lunches were prepared first). I've never been keen on celery, but I'm really hoping I develop a taste for it, cos it's not very nice at the moment! So the plan is I'll be drinking this stuff every morning and following it up with a fruit based breakfast which no fats to help my liver; then I'll be doing salads for lunch followed by a pretty much normal dinner so it won't impact on the family meals. I can't start the whole thing till my physical book arrives in a couple of weeks from the UK; however I'll probably wait for a few months until I do the detox since I suspect it'll make me feel pretty awful. A friend is doing it now and she's got vertigo and tinnitus and other things going on from it, considering I get those to some extent normally I have to expect I'll get them too.
If it works for me, then I'll see if I can persuade the family to change their diet to be more liver friendly, don't know how easy that'll be considering one's stuck in his ways and another is autistic. I hope it does, sick of not feeling as well as I should be. Certainly the dietary changes can't hurt, and they may well help.

I'm still knitting, but less than normal as one of my pain areas is both arms. I have an ulnar nerve injury on both sides and my bicep on my right is tight and grumpy (that's not an injury, suspecting it has more to do with RSI). Doing exercises for them and stretching as well as stretching for groin ache which came on on Sunday. I've had that on and off ever since my first surgery, suspecting that is a direct result of how they treat your body when you're under so they can get to everything. If it doesn't ease off that'll take me to the doctor just to get checked out.

I do have an answer for one of my problems, though, well it's probably an answer. The dizziness I got after my 2015 turn looks like it's an after effect of a silent migraine. I get this feeling like a piece of soft cloth (velvet) brushing through my brain for a moment; then I get tired and the next morning I'm absolutely wasted, plus the feeling off centre thing comes back and I have to start my balance exercises again. My symptoms point in the migraine direction, especially the aftermath. I had an MRI about a year after the first one so it's nothing really bad, but it's not fun either.

I have been sewing and am cutting out more stuff shortly; I need more workout leggings and I also need more undies without FOE as I seem to react to that when it's in sensitive areas; pity, it's so much easier to apply than cotton bands.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-78428121459591349732019-12-13T20:20:00.000+13:002019-12-13T20:20:08.089+13:00Back with more sewingI've been having some elbow issues of late, a dickey nerve (I thought it was tendons but my physio says nerve) so less knitting. Still waiting on more horsehair for the chair so that's on hold, and I can't start weaving till the next stage of the chair is finished so....

What do you do when you can't knit much, can't game (thumb tendonitis) and need to do more than read all day? Well, you start cleaning house for one thing and you get back to the sewing for the other.

Today I deep cleaned the dining area, all bar the biggest book case which somehow I didn't see despite it dominating the room; will have to do that tomorrow. Before I started that though I'd been doing sewing. Some for the boys and some for me. You've already seen the undies, now to show you the rest.
I chose 5 patterns I already owned and got cutting. I might have some more to try out later, but in the meantime this is my selection this time.

Clockwise from top left we have: Jennifer Lauren Handmade Trixie Briefs, SUAT Women's boxers, SUAT Frisky Knickers and Jalie Julia Briefs

and finally SUAT Bunzies in the full coverage cut.

I'm not showing photos of them worn, my butt isn't something I want to show the world but I'll give you an idea of how these all fit. I have a reasonably full rear end so I like coverage; all these undies were chosen because of their coverage claims. I'm reasonably happy with 3 of them and found the other 2 did too much of the wedgie creep for me.

1. Trixies - I love the look, they're a bit vintage, but unfortunately they do the wedgie creep; not the worse of the 5 but not good enough for me to make them again.

2. SUAT Boxers - surprisingly comfy, no wedgie for obvious reasons and will be great to stop the summer chafing. Only downside is they do use a lot more fabric than the other styles and since they're a completely different style I'm taking these out of the running. Will possibly make some for cycling in when I'm wearing a dress. They have the advantage they don't look like you're flashing your knickers!

3. SUAT Frisky Knickers - these were the best ones in my opinion, very little creeping at all and reasonably flattering. I do like the self bands too.

4. Jalie Julia - 2nd best, a little creep, but I didn't do the elastic quite right (cut it too short after reading the pattern incorrectly) so I'll have to make these again to see how they work when done correctly. I do like the option to use a different fabric for the front panel too. I think the FOE elastic I used was possibly not the greatest which may also be contributing.

5. SUAT Bunzies - I was expecting a lot from this pattern after the Friskies (and the Scrundlewear I made a year back), but unfortunately these ones head straight for where they shouldn't and then stay there. They won't be one I'll make again; pity cos I love the fabrics I used.

So that's it so far, I'm also testing out bra type tops but having only made 2 so far I feel I should try out at least one more before reporting on them.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-50432034804703019752019-11-28T16:30:00.003+13:002019-11-28T20:23:30.370+13:00Gluten Free Doesn't Have to Mean Taste FreeI've slowly been perfecting my gluten free bread recipe; this started out as a white loaf and has slowly morphed to a good solid seeded bread with body! It's not a brick and it has good flavour and I'm pretty sure it may even be approaching good for you.

I make it in the breadmaker cos I'm lazy, but I'm sure you could do it the other way too. I do premix; one thing I've found with GF bread and breadmakers is that if you don't premix you end up with lumps of dry flour in the finished loaf; not a good thing.

Ingredients:
2 cups GF flour - I use the following for this:
1/2 cup each tapioca, chickpea and sorghum flour (sieve these as they tend to clump)
1/4 cup each sunflower flour (home ground) and hemp flour
Handful of hulled hemp seeds, crushed almonds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds plus a tablespoon of chia seeds
2 tbsp sugar (don't leave this out, the yeast needs to feed on it)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp xantham gum or similar; I'm slowly reducing this from 2 tsp and will see if I can get to 0
1 1/2 tsp active dried yeast

1 cup lukewarm milk or alternative (I use A2 cows milk)
2 tbsp oil (I use olive oil)
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
2 room temperature eggs

Combine and mix well in a bowl before transferring into your breadmaker's mixing bowl. Set for GF loaf and let it do the rest.

Let the loaf rest after it comes out and then enjoy. This goes equally well with butter, jam or cheese. Tonight I'm using it to go around a sausage or two; it's less malleable than gluten type bread, but you can't have everything!

Keeps well for a few days on the bench.

Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-41019860255216930522019-10-11T19:25:00.001+13:002019-10-11T19:25:09.452+13:00Progress on the chair.Despite some hiccups, mostly involving the silly staple gun jamming, I've managed to get the chair re-sprung. I've also bought an upholstery staple gun and contacted the place I bought the heavier gauge one from to let them know about the jamming issue. It's now a week since I emailed them a video of me using it as requested with no response; I'm feeling distinctly unhappy about that and will be ringing them on Monday if I don't hear anything by then.

This is what the chair looks like now:

As you can see it's now fully sprung and I've done the 8-way tie. Unfortunately there's a couple of places I had to redo as the staple gun also cut my string a few times; I'll have to recheck it all before I put the first layer of fabric on it.

I've also started sampling for the fabric I'm weaving for the chair. I can't do the main fabric until the chair has that first layer finished so I can get semi-accurate measurements. Once that's done then I can warp up and get weaving.
I'm weaving at 10EPI and I'm happy with that on the loom, it remains to be seen what it turns out like after wet finishing of course.

The yarn is a Romney boucle, it's not as easy as I'm used to due to all the lumps in the yarn, but it's actually behaving itself better than I expected. I'm having to be careful to just use the beater to place the yarn as I'm aiming for an even weave with 10 picks per inch approx; though I will also trial a section with a harder beat to see which works best in the finished fabric.

This weekend will hopefully see me finish the sample and also get that first layer of fabric onto the chair as well as making the edge roll for the chair. The only edge roll I could get here was an extruded foam product which is something I wasn't prepared to use. Instead I'm making my own using the jute webbing and filling it with wool roving. The reason for the edge roll is to soften the edge of the timber so the fabric won't wear through where it goes over the edge. I want to get this finished so I can then move onto making my weaving stool.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-83127195391632240592019-09-21T20:18:00.000+12:002019-09-21T20:18:48.610+12:00Long TimeYes, I've been a bad blogger again. Partly due to health issues, partly due to losing my sewing chair (it's now my son's homework chair) and partly just me forgetting to blog. I've been knitting and spinning and I'm trying something new as well.

The reason I don't have the sewing chair is that the chair my son was using started attacking him; it was originally my gran's chair and I decided to refurbish it. Unfortunately I don't have a before photo, but I'm documenting as I go. I first of all took off the disintegrating fabric, and took out the innards which had not been done correctly; they'd stapled the springs to a piece of wood on the bottom!

At this point I'm almost ready to put the new springs in, it'll be quite a high crown on the seat but the frame is quite short so it needs to be higher in order to be comfortable to get in and out of. I've torn out the silly timber on the bottom and remade the back from scratch due to some major cracks in the original. I've also learned how to use a compressor and put webbing on the bottom (after making a webbing stretcher) and also on the back. The original back had 2 pieces of webbing, total!

The pattern is wonderful with great instructions and the fabric is perfect for it. Boiled wool is lovely to work with, because it's a stretch knit it's very forgiving and being wool adds extra forgiveness, it doesn't need prewashing and won't fray either. Only thing to be aware of is when pressing be sure to use a press cloth or else it wil<span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">l go shiny; this is normal for wool, however that's a small price to pay when you consider how well it reacts to pressing in the first place; unlike polyester it plays very nicely with heat.
<span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">I made a couple of adjustments to the pattern, the main one was dropping the bust point due to Mother Nature attatching my breasts a little lower than pattern companies design for and I also graded between sizes since I'm best described as non-standard. I have to do these adjustments with almost every pattern I use. I top stitched around the hem and fronts so that the lining can't roll around; it wasn't actually trying to, as I said wool takes pressing very well but I don't like to take chances and I love how topstitching looks so...
<span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">
In the interests of full disclosure I was given the fabric for this project by For Fabric Sake, I bought the pattern a while ago. Although I was gifted the fabric my opinions are not swayed by that in any way. If making the same outfit yourself I'd probably go with a slightly heavier weight lining or else use a woven fabric as a lightweight knit can be a little tricky unless you're used to them, but in this case the print went so well with the wool that I'm glad I put the effort in.Rachellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06409673383518447394noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11524401.post-52451060345109117512019-04-07T09:24:00.000+12:002019-04-07T09:24:14.438+12:00Sewing and knittingI've got stuff cut out, but the weather has now turned cold and it's all summer stuff; it'll now be put on hold till next spring in the hopes that I'll be feeling healthier and that the fit will be better too due to my new diet I've lost a little weight.

I have done some sewing though and some knitting, I've finished 2 pairs of socks for Sock Madness and cast on a 3rd, and I've made Dh some undies. Unfortunately the pattern doesn't suit him well, the cuffs are too tight (tree trunk legs from judo) and the top band isn't firm enough and rolls down. This was the SUAT Mens Boxerwear pattern, I'm going to try a Jalie one next. Much as I love SUAT's women's undies, my shape is rather different from DH's and not all pattern companies work for all body types.
Someone attacked people at prayer, people who had done nothing to deserve it, people who were a part of our community. I feel for those families and their friends as well as the people who are now helping them and who were first responders.
If you are upset about this you should be, if you are angry that is also fine, but please don't take it out on anyone else. Don't give the person who did this airtime, don't reward the behaviour; give your time to those who were affected instead. Let us pull together as a community to support eachother in our grief, reach out your hands in love, do not give in to hate.
